Of late, we have heard so many of our school clients express challenges around attracting and retaining marketing personnel in their schools.

With ever increasing competition, a more demanding parent market, shoestring budgets, limited resource, with such broad remits, school marketing teams are under more pressure than ever. We get asked a lot about what we recommend in terms of team structures – ‘Who should we have, and at what level?’.

need experienced professionals to manage branding, digital strategy, pupil recruitment, and community engagement, but securing and keeping the right talent has become a significant challenge.

“Securing and keeping the right talent has become a significant challenge.”

So how can schools attract and retain marketing staff?

  • Salary matters – their role is directly linked to income generation, so reflect this. Buy cheap, buy twice.
  • A focused remit – packing too much into their job specification will only make them run for the hills. Decide your priorities and keep it narrow.
  • Flexible working options – marketing requires concentrated planning time. Don’t be against offering an onsite and home hybrid arrangement.
  • Resources and career progression – Ensuring marketing teams have the right tools, training, and staffing levels will help them succeed.
  • Support – Marketing in a school can be a lonely role. Meeting regularly with your Marketing manager to listen and help fuel their plans will make them feel supported.
  • Recognise and reward contributions – Acknowledge the impact of marketing on admissions and school reputation. Small gestures of appreciation go a long way.
  • Create a positive work culture – A collaborative and supportive environment – ensuring teachers value marketing and support it when required – makes a significant difference in staff retention.

By addressing these challenges head-on, schools can build strong, committed marketing teams that drive long-term success.

Where to advertise if you are recruiting for a marketing position at your school:

  • LinkedIn – post on here, and ask your staff to share the post too.
  • Sharing the job ad with your parent body – ‘Know anyone?’ style.
  • Advertising on the AMCIS jobs vacancies e-bulletin – The contact is Lucy Mason (lucy@amcis.co.uk). The e-bulletin is emailed to a large database of school marketers.
